Thoughts of subtle elegance glide through my mind whenever I see a Ferrari 400i. It has long been a favorite of mine despite the naysayers. Leonardo Fioravanti's design for a 2+2 coupe for Pininfarina is timeless. Just imagine striding across the continent in the comfort of this grand tourer.
The Co-Hog Special Edition version is a bit less accommodating, being only about 7" (18 cm) long, but it is easier to park, and maintenance is negligible.
Only two were ever made using jelutong for the body and maple for the wheels/tires. Both 400i’s were painted using Ferrari's Gray Metallic (Grigio Scuro). Graphics are hand cut from two types of sheet vinyl. I hand drew and then silkscreened my interpretation of the Ferrari wheels.
This particular Co-Hog 400i (2/2) was shipped to Nagoya, Japan on 10/7/1984 to become part of Junichiro Hiramatsu's collection. He ordered one of every Ferrari I made.
1:1 Ferraris were also in Mr. Hiramatsu's collection. His Ferrari 400i is shown here at home.
Mr. Hiramatsu's Ferrari 400i, Ferrari 365 Daytona, Fiat Dino Spyder, and ASA Ferrarina 1000 GT are highlighted here.
Both the Dino Spyder and ASA Ferrarina have very interesting places in Ferrari's history. It's too much to go into here but an internet search will perhaps add to your Ferrari knowledge.
Only 883 Ferrari 400i's were made. The Pininfarina made bodies were shipped from Turin to Ferrari in Modena to become one with the V12 and chassis. The much-maligned automatic transmission, a first for Ferrari, was the three speed GM Turbo-Hydramatic 400 made in Michigan, which was also used in many other European vehicles - including Rolls Royce. Elegance indeed!
