177 Co-Hog Porsches were made between 1980 and 1983. They were sold as single cars or as part of one or two car race teams. I had always wanted to upgrade a few with the turned aluminum wheels and Delrin tires from the Co-Hog Porsche 956/962 edition. In late 2023 I found four complete bodies from 1980 that had never been finished. Game on!
Four previous posts show the first three pieces and their construction process - links are at the end of the post. They joined collections in California, Ohio, and Florida here in the US. One was done in Martini livery and the other two were finished in white.
This is my keeper out of the four. The primary change, besides the black paint, is the spoked wheels replacing the BBS basket weaves. I added the yellow windshield banner strip to brighten things up a bit.
All four pieces also have upgrades to the rear exhaust panel over the standard edition.
These are the five-spoke centers with hubs, aluminum wheels and Delrin tires before assembly. The rear tires were reduced in diameter by 0.1" (2.5 mm) to look more comfortable in the wheel wells.
After all the sanding, filling, and priming was completed multiple times, they were finally painted.
The centers were 3D printed first using 100% PLA (gray) and then subsequently using 40% Wood/60% PLA for better workability. Because of the FDM process the many stacked layers become a challenge to properly finish. I always make extras for testing and the inevitable mistakes.
A simple two-point pivot system was used to size the individual spokes to fit. Pivoting the MDF block under the clamp controls the depth of cut and pivoting around the brass rod at the wheel center gives good overall concentricity.
I'm happy that I had an opportunity to fulfill my upgrade wishes with these four Co-Hog Porsches. My keeper now has a place of honor in my personal collection.
